Throughout history the manipulating (manipulation) of playing cards was done to accent other artforms such as adding flair to shuffling and dealing during a poker game to show card skill during a card magic act and even using cards as the object for a juggling routine.
In the past, card manipulation had been used only for facilitate accent other artforms in variant ways such as: adding flair and elegance to shuffling and dealing cards during a poker game; showing off card skill and astonishing ability during a card magic performance; and even by using playing cards as an object for a juggling routine.

Although there were people in history that (throughout history there were people who) have performed highlights of card manipulation in their acts such as Houdini who named himself the "King of Cards", ("The King of Cards") and a brilliant juggler that (who) called himself the "Polish Card Juggler" ("The Polish Card Juggler"), it has never been publically (publicly) recognized, established, or practiced as it's (its) own artform until in 2001 (until 2001).
In spite of the fact that few people, such as: Harry Houdini who named himself "The King of Cards" and a brilliant juggler who called himself "The Polish Juggler", performed highlights of card manipulation in their acts, it had never been publicly recognized and established nor practiced as its own artform until 2001.

De'vo vom Schattenreich and Jerry Cestkowski were the first to publically (publicly) create the manipulating (manipulation) of playing cards as its own performance art separate (separated) from magic and gambling and pushed it strongly throughout the world through websites, videos, instructional DVDs, a large 500 (545) page book, a public radio show, custom card products, a world tournament and their own XCM column in a magazine.
De'vo vom Schattenreich and Jerry Cestkowski were the first to publicly create card manipulation as its own performance art separated from magic and gambling. Moreover, they spread it all across the world through websites, forums, videos, instructional DVDs, a large 545 page book, a public live radio show, custom card products, a yearly world XCM tournament and their own XCM column in a magazine. Not only that, but they also support new XCMers and promote them.

They took card manipulation to a new level creating new card manipulation categories that go far outside of what has has (has) ever been done before with playing cards by magicians, card players, or (and) gamblers.
